INDUS (THE INDIAN) is a faint southern constellation conceived by Dutch sailors Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman to represent one of the indigenous people they encountered on their trips.

Two brown dwarfs (foreground) orbit the star Epsilon Indi (left). Our own sun is in the background (upper right).

Armed with arrows, Indus features in Johann Bode’s Uranographia.

A ring of dark dust is silhouetted against the bright glow of the elliptical galaxy NGC 7049 in Indus.

TIMELINE

1960: The nearby star Epsilon Indi (or ε Ind) is one of the targets of Frank Drake’s Project Ozma, the first SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program.

2003: A binary brown dwarf is discovered in a very wide orbit around the star Epsilon Indi. At the time, those were the nearest brown dwarfs known.

2018: Astronomers confirm the existence of a Jupiter-like planet orbiting Epsilon Indi. At just under 12 light-years, it is the nearest known gas giant outside our solar system.
